Pride & Prejudice

P&P offers unique programs for lesbian, gay, bisexual, intersex, transgender, transsexual and questioning youth 25 and under.

Counselling and Groups:

Through individual counselling and group work, our programs support youth who are challenged by a wide range of issues. Our clients may be exploring issues related to gender identity and/or sexual orientation, community, prejudice, friendships, family and/or may need support during a life transition. We serve youth who are struggling with depression or anxiety, or confronting traumatic experiences, including childhood abuse and family violence. We help clients make sense of and cope with a variety of complex struggles. At the same time they are encouraged to explore and embrace their own individuality and identity.

Current P&P Groups:

Speak Out - A dynamic youth advocacy and activism group for LGBTQ youth. Changing the world for the better.

New Viewz - a 16 week therapy and peer support group for gay/bi/queer/questioning guys aged 20 - 25.

Gender Play
This is a unique program for lesbian, gay, bisexual, intersex, transgender, transsexual and questioning youth interested in exploring the complexities of gender and gender identity through art. The program, which runs once a year, evolves from group exploration of the issues to participants writing and staging a public performance that encompasses visual art, theatre, music, poetry and dance. Guest artists from the community support and offer input to participants as they embark on a journey to examine many questions concerning gender and identity.

Current Research:

Youth-Gender Action Project (Y-GAP) is a community-based research project between Pride & Prejudice, CTYS, and Rebecca Hammond of Dalhousie University who is funded through the Ontario HIV Treatment Network.  The project is committed to understanding and improving the lives of trans youth living in Toronto and across Ontario through identifying gaps in knowledge about their lives and in current program/service delivery.

P&P was a fortunate recipient of a 2006 grant from the Lesbian and Gay Community Appeal Foundation (www.lgca.ca). We thank them for their support and recognition of our initiatives. The money was used towards hiring a Peer Research Assistant in keeping with the project’s community capacity-building principles. We are pleased to have Krys McGuire join the Y-GAP team.

Education:

Families in TRANSition: A guide for parents of trans youth. Written in consultation with our Community Working Group, this accessible guide includes advice to parents from other parents and therapists, Questions & Answers, information about hormones and surgery, as well as local, national and international multi-media resources for parents. The project has received financial support from Lesbian and Gay Community Appeal Foundation and from the General Reinsurance Company.
