In response to community need, Pride & Prejudice has developed a set of support services and resources for parents of trans youth. These include the Families in TRANSition guide and Advice for Parents brochure, 2 groups for parents, and consultation to families.
Parent Resources Families in TRANSition is the first comprehensive Canadian publication to address the needs of parents and families supporting their trans children. Families in TRANSition summarizes the experiences, strategies, and successes of a working group of community consultants – researchers, counsellors, community leaders, parents, as well as trans youth themselves. The guide aims be inviting and inclusive of families who may be at any one of a number of stages, and especially so for parents who may have had their adolescent or young adult child come out recently as trans. Families in TRANSition provides practical and sensitive parent-to-parent and professional therapeutic advice, and tries to anticipate and address common questions and concerns, as well as normalize the varied reactions families may have. The guide offers accurate, up-to-date information on terminology, health, and issues related to transition, and suggests to families important ways they can take care of themselves and one another through this challenging and critical time. Families in TRANSition provides a provincial context and relevant local resources for continued youth and family support towards strengthening families. Click here to download a free pdf copy of the guide or to order your own hardcopy version.
Advice for Parents of Trans Youth As a companion piece to Families in TRANSition, we developed a brochure containing the ‘Top 10’ of parent-to-parent advice. Click here to download the brochure. Cette brochure est aussi disponible en français.
Support Groups In 2008, Pride & Prejudice partnered with Transceptance, a peer-support group for the parents of trans youth. Together we are pelased to offer a continuum of care and support for parents to meet their distinct needs at different stages of their journey. We do this by offering two groups: Families in TRANSition (FIT) Group The FIT Group is a time-limited group to provide information and support to 'new' parents - parents who have recently had an adolescent or young adult child 'come out' as trans. Each session is dedicated to a theme of special relevance (e.g. family coping, disclosure, decision-making, grieving etc.) and/or basic information (about trans-identities, medical interventions, legal considerations etc.). Transceptance Group Transceptance has been providing peer-support for parents of transsexual and transgendered youth for over 8 years. We share resources and build a sense of community to reduce the isolation and stress that can be part of this ongoing journey. For more information about our parent support groups, click here for a program brochure.
Family Consultation We will provide one-time consultation to families who have a youth (14-25) who has recently come out as trans. This allows parents the opportunity to ask questions and receive support at the first steps of their journey.
