Frequently Asked Questions

What will the interview be like?

The interview should take about 2 hours. There are two distinct parts to the interview, one part where Nicola will be asking questions and one where Rebecca will be doing the same. Both of us will be around for both parts of interview so that we can make sure we’re not repeating ourselves.

Each of the different parts has a separate focus. Rebecca’s research explores how discrimination and poor quality services can affect health and increase for HIV. She will ask about experiences you may have had around discrimination, and around finding health care or other services that are important to you. Nicola’s research explores multiple aspects of the lives of trans youth and what makes for a successful transition. She will ask you questions relevant to this theme. P&P also has a special interest in youth counselling experiences for the development of best practice approaches to serving our communities.

You can do the interview anywhere you like. Interviews can be done at Central Toronto Youth Services, at a community centre or café where you feel comfortable, or even at your house. We can also help arrange a meeting place if space needs to be booked.

Will my name be used or appear anywhere?

No. The interviews are anonymous and we really understand and respect that for some people participating in these interviews can be risky.  In other words, only the researchers and the Peer Research Assistant will know your actual name and contact information and your name, and any uniquely identifying features about you or your life will not be recorded. When we have the interview, your name will not be recorded and even if you mention your name we won’t transcribe it when we type up the interviews. Also, any names of friends, family, or specific places will not be recorded to minimize any possibility of you being identified. You can read more about the interviews and anonymity by looking at the consent forms.

What will happen with the stuff I say, will it make a difference?

We definitely hope so! We want this research to have a noticeable impact on the lives of trans youth. We hope to generate information about some of the service barriers that youth may encounter and to be able to say something about the effect that these barriers have on their health and well-being. In addition to the conclusions and reports created by Nicola (for CTYS) and Rebecca (for Dalhousie University) we’ll also be proving a readable project summary and some info sheets that focus on particular issues and challenges specific to trans youth in Ontario. Check our Results & Findings section <link to RESULTS & FINDINGS> occasionally to see what we’re doing.

What if the interview brings up tough stuff for me?

  1. You can stop the interview at any time

  2. We have a community resource sheet of available services <link to resource sheets>

  3. You can also contact the researchers after your interview. We can help you get hooked up with a counsellor or other services that may be able to help you

What’s the timeline on the project?

Interviews for Y-GAP started in mid-November of 2007 and will continue until at least February of 2008. We will be transcribing the interviews and interpreting the data. We will have a project report, including a one-page summary, available in July. We will also be creating other useful information sheets over the summer and fall.

What if live outside of Toronto – how can I participate?
